During the week I had the enormous pleasure to meet one of the great female politicians of our time – Michelle Bachelet. Madame Bachelet is currently Executive Director of UN Women and Under Secretary of the United Nations. She is the former President of Chile.
Her work takes her all over the world advancing the plight of women and girls and we were privileged that during a visit to Ireland this week she was able to fit in a seminar on women and political decision-making.
The event was kindly hosted by Orla O’Connor and the National Women’s Council and superbly Chaired by Minister Kathleen Lynch who continues to be a tower of strength and inspiration to other women- that potent mix of support and challenge.
The 5050 Group had the enormous privilege to speak at the event. I attach my speech here. But really we were there to listen and be inspired by Madame Bachelet.
And she didn’t disappoint. Her speech was laced with anecdotes that brought to life her messages about the importance of role models; the importance of ensuring that the quota legislation is followed; and the importance of ensuring that women do not fall victim to the trick of being run on un-winnable seats.
We could have listened to her all day but alas her time was short as she was rushed off to the Aras for her meeting with President Higgins. But the effect was lasting. Everyone in the room was touched by her wisdom and that powerful mixture of down to earth, no nonsense practicality and the wisdom that shines through from a woman with a powerful intellect as well as a depth and breadth of experience that you simply do not find in Ireland .
Many thanks to all of the member of 5050 from all over the country who travelled to Dublin to attend the event.
And well done to Orla O’Connor and the team at NWCI for the great job they are doing on behalf of women in Ireland and for arranging such an amazing event.
